Dragon Fine and the ancient art of Maki-e

The pen Dragon Fine is an elite writing accessory, collectible ballpoint from the Japanese brand Namiki, performed by the author in the old Japanese technique of varnish miniature Maki-e.

The art of Maki-e was born more than a thousand years ago and flourished during the Edo period (1603-1868). They cover an item with the special varnish of sumac tree juice. They draw with the gold powder, apply it with a bamboo stick or a soft brush. Order of applying varnish, metal powder, and drawing might vary in different Maki-e techniques.

Dragon Fine pen is a part of the Nippon Art collection. A symbol of power, intelligence, and well-being, mythical heroes’ protector Tatsu entwined the pen's body. The dragon wriggled among the enormous clouds that give blessing water to fertile land.

The composition is made in the Hira Maki-e technique. The hira maki-e is famous for its refined relief of the image. They mixed the metal powder with varnish, applied it to a black lacquer foundation, and polished it afterward. The color palette of an elegant drawing consists of delicate shades of gold, silver, and green. Under the dragon, there are three hieroglyphs. That is kokkokai – a signature of the master who created the painting.

The pen comes with a black cartridge from the Japanese brand Pilot, a cardboard box, a wooden box with red velvet lodgement, a manual, and a warranty certificate.
