Sukashi-tsuba is an early Japanese Sword-guard made in the ancient cutting sukashi technology.
Tsuba for a samurai is not just a guard at the end of the grip of a blade, it is a sacred part of the weapon that demonstrates the good taste of a warrior and his position in society. The tsuba was created by the artisan (tsubako). The secrets of the craft have been passed down from generation to generation for centuries.
Sukashi-tsuba is made of iron in the shape of a circle (Tetsu-Ji Maru-Gata).
The symmetrical ji-sukashi openwork (the type where the foreground pattern is preserved and the background removed) with ginger blossoms (myoga) and flying wild geese (karigane).
The author's signature is missing (mumei).
The time of creation is the second half of the Edo period (1603-1867).
Sukashi-tsuba is a fine antique mounting that is considered collectible.
