Hannya demon mask ring by Hidetoshi Nakayama
This impressive horned demon was crafted by Japanese virtuoso of design and knifemaker Hidetoshi Nakayama for the Maria Stalina® brand. Before arriving at our store, the ring was presented at the New York Custom Knife Show 2019.
Before you is no mere nameless imp, but Hannya herself — a fierce demon and one of the most popular characters in Japanese Noh theater. Hannya is the transformation of a jealous woman betrayed by her lover — hence the agonizing arch of the brows combined with sharp fangs. Since ancient times, the Japanese have used the image of the horned demon as a protective charm, shielding its owner from evil forces.
The ring is crafted from white stainless metal, its surface flawlessly polished and fragmentarily adorned with blackening. The inner side bears two characters — 英俊— the signature of Hidetoshi-san himself.
