Poggetti Guy

Guy Poggetty is an amazing blacksmith and knifemaker from Marseille

Custom knives by Guy Poggetti are a rarity in the world of knifemaking, all products are made by the author personally in modest quantities.

When you hear about French folding knives, you probably think about the elegant suit or cabinet flippers with sophisticated shapes and finishes. And you are right, however, this is not our present case. Guy Poggetti is an avid hunter and fisherman, designing his knives based on his application needs. Nevertheless, the design of Guy Poggetti knives, made for hard fieldwork, is not deprived of French charm and sophistication.

The knives with a formidable bull on the emblem are born in a small French estate, where an old house rises behind the trees. The estate belongs to the Provençal knife maker Guy Poggetti. Guy prefers to work in the garden under the apple trees. He says that he is inspired by the towers of Marseille, visible through the branches. Guy Poggetti is in love with his hometown, he grew up there, married, raised two children, and forged hundreds of blades. This city gave its name to the Marseillaise, its walls and pavements breathe with ancient legends.

It is not surprising that Guy Pogetti became interested in history (especially the Middle Ages)  as a child. He read the chronicles of the Crusades and studied the weapons and armor of the Hundred Years' War. Interest in the knightly period of France gave rise to another passion — bow hunting. Such a hobby is very expensive, and therefore Guy began to make weapons himself. At first, he mastered the forging of arrowheads, and then he simply could not stop. The next step was the production of replicas of the weapons of the Crusaders.

It doesn't matter how you hunt with a gun or archery, a hunter simply cannot be without a knife. Realizing this, Guy Pogetti decided to forge his first knife — it was a fixed blade knife and it was not perfect. He began to experiment, testing each model during the hunt, he honed his skills for a long time, distributing his creations among friends of hunters and friends in historical reconstructions. By the beginning of the 21st century, Guy already had a reputation as a high-class blacksmith who could work with almost any type of steel and forge excellent Damascus of his production.

Guy Poggetti entered the professional world of knifemaking in 2003. He came not alone, but with a team. Poggetti looked for like-minded people at gun shows and thematic forums. He always forges and assembles knives himself, for the rest, he is open to cooperation. Among his co-authors are such outstanding personalities of French knifemaking as engraver Sergei Rau, designer Gregory Delaunay and blacksmith Claude Schussler. Now Guy Pogetti has completely focused his attention on the production of knives.

Mostly, he makes the author's hunting knives with a fixed blade and handles made of buffalo horn, carbon fiber, and other materials. The knifemaker is not afraid to experiment with blade alloys, in his portfolio, you will find products with blades of a wide range of steels: from Z60 to Damascus. Poggetti is much more conservative with finishes and shaping. He practically does not work with mirror polishing; he prefers satin and tumbling. In terms of form, the avid hunter Guy Pogetti is guided by functionality. Hence his love for the type of Bowie blade, which can be used to cut down a branch, rip open a bag, and skin game. Most of the master's hunting knives come with leather sheaths, also made by Guy Poggetti himself.

Guy first presented his knives to the knife community in 2008 at the FICX-Paris exposition. His products immediately won the respect of knife lovers from all over the world with their excellent blade quality and impeccable mechanics. Guy Pogetti appeared as the author of custom Damascus — his Damascus blades amaze with a variety of patterns and harmony of lines. For flippers, Guy often uses the Clip-Point blade type, which is less aggressive and structurally more suitable for a folding knife than Bowie.

Guy Poggetti compares himself to a neurosurgeon who performs each operation for a long time and painstakingly. The knifemaker enjoys the process of creating. His works are individual and original, they will certainly decorate any collection.
