In his interview with Maria Stalina, Nikolai said that the design of a knife mechanism begins with an analysis of brush movements. The development and implementation of the opening system is the most attractive and most important step for him. The lock is given special attention, it can take months to model and think through the details of a new mechanism. While the design of the model is born spontaneously in the author's head. Nikolai admits that any fact from his daily life can influence the design, whether it is a book he has just read, a movie he has watched, or an image inspired by a street billboard.
"Tolkien is poor and miserable"
From childhood, Nikolai Lomachenkov admires science fiction literature. Nikolai explains it like this: "I'm not very interested in reading books about what is already in the real world, I encounter it every day." His favorite science fiction writers are Clifford Simak, Robert Sheckley, Isaac Asimov, the Strugatsky Brothers, and Frank Herbert. But Nikolai was not impressed by the writing abilities of one of the most famous and widely read writers in this genre, John Tolkien. According to the master, Tolkien is too keen on describing not the most significant moments, while he pays too little attention to the main action. Likely, the desire to create mechanisms that are fundamentally different from the existing ones is directly related to the literary taste of the master. Nikolai's knives have something fantastic, futuristic. Each new lock of this author is an attempt in its field to expand the boundaries of the world known to him.
"Red steampunk or dieselpunk is my favorite at the moment"
Soon, Nikolai plans to develop steampunk and dieselpunk knives. The knifemaker believes that now the public will be interested in the forgotten motives of Soviet industrialization, hence the name of the future concept — "Red Steampunk". Despite the ever-increasing popularity of this fantasy genre, there are still very few knife makers working in this style. Nikolai assumes that the synthesis of two related themes can inspire him to create several original models in design. In addition, steampunk opens up almost limitless possibilities for the flight of thought. Nikolai already has several knife blanks inspired by Soviet industrialization.
“I have already made a knife from two parts, now I want to make it from one!”
Nikolai Lomachenkov prefers not to talk about his long-term creative plans. However, he considers his main goal to be the manufacture of a folding knife from a single part. "Unfortunately, there is simply no technological base and necessary materials for the implementation of this idea yet," the master notes. "What is the point of making a knife that has almost zero cutting properties, and will also become completely unusable after a few uses? But if suddenly there is an opportunity to implement such a project, I will take it!".
