A Russian Winner at American Blade Show

Russian knifemaking is gaining ever greater recognition on the global market. Major knife shows are being won by both individual master makers and companies producing folding knives. A considerable number of Russian knife makers can now boast awards from international exhibitions.

In 2019, the “Best Tactical Knife of the Year” award at Blade Show in Atlanta went to the Quantum by Shirogorov Brothers Workshop. Just a year earlier, a knife by the Russian brand CultroTech received the same distinction in the custom category.

CultroTech was founded by Maxim Soltamuradov. In 2015, Maxim registered the company Nozhevye Tekhnologii (“Knife Technologies”) in Kislovodsk, Stavropol Krai, to manufacture knives under the CultroTech name.

When you hear the words “company” and “manufacturing”, it is easy to picture an assembly line churning out one knife after another. That is not how Nozhevye Tekhnologii operates. The company produces small batches of models designed primarily by Maxim Soltamuradov. Production runs usually do not exceed 100 pieces. Alongside limited production models, the brand also offers semi-customs and true one-off customs. Custom CultroTech knives can also be found at online auctions.

CultroTech manufactures the main components of its knives using CNC machinery. Every knife is then assembled and tuned by hand. What is particularly distinctive is the workshop's “single-maker” approach: rather than passing a knife from one specialist to another at different stages of production, one maker takes responsibility for the knife from start to finish. The CultroTech workshop employs just five people.

The workshop pays particular attention to heat treatment. Every knifemaker knows that only properly executed heat treatment can unlock the full potential of a steel's performance characteristics. For this crucial stage, Nozhevye Tekhnologii brought in Denis Frolov, a heat-treatment expert capable of taking steel hardness up to 67 HRC on the Rockwell scale while preserving impressive blade toughness.

CultroTech primarily specializes in models designed to work equally well in tactical and EDC roles. Maxim Soltamuradov has repeatedly emphasized that functionality is at the heart of every knife the brand makes. These are not knives meant to sit prettily on a shelf, but tough, capable tools designed to work alongside their owners.

Maxim is not afraid to put new models to the test. The internet is full of videos showing CultroTech knives slicing through rope, and he is always pleased when an owner of a Nozhevye Tekhnologii folder shares photos or video of the knife being put to real use — whether gutting a carp or sharpening a stake.

The brand's most famous model is the Svarn II, a semi-custom tactical folder that won an award at Blade Show in 2018. Its drop-point blade is made from premium M390 steel and heat-treated by Denis Frolov to 62–63 HRC. A double fuller with decorative holes runs along the blade. The handle houses a titanium liner lock, while the titanium scales are accented with hornbeam wood. The blade features a flawless mirror-polished finish.

We all know tactical knives, EDCs, and gentleman's folders. But how often do you come across a “picnic knife”?

The Urs was designed specifically for getting outdoors. This excellent flipper, with its smooth blade deployment and reliable button lock, hides a small secret. Built into the spine, right where you would normally find the backspacer, is a titanium corkscrew made using 4D milling.

Another undeniable success for CultroTech was its collaboration with SIL Manufactory. This stylish folder, equipped with an original lock designed by Nikolay Lomachenkov, was named Panzerschiff — German for “armored ship”. With its striking looks, robust construction, and unusual mechanism, the knife makes an excellent statement accessory.
