Reate Knives

The Chinese Brand That Challenged Western Knifemakers

Luke Scheepers is a young Australian knifemaker who has earned a reputation for his distinctive and exceptionally well-crafted folders. He primarily specializes in custom EDC folding knives, but his lineup also includes impressive neck knives. More recently, Luke has begun exploring kitchen-knife making. So far, his culinary creations have been made exclusively for his wife, although they may eventually become available to collectors and fans of his work.

Luke Scheepers lives in Brisbane, Australia's largest city, located on the Pacific coast. His fascination with knives and edged tools began in childhood, eventually leading him to take up the demanding craft of knifemaking. Fortunately, his day job provided him with many of the practical skills needed to build knives: Luke works as a fitter and machinist, making his custom folders in his spare time.

He sells his work under the Sheepersbuilt brand, focusing primarily on customs and semis. Luke is also open to commissions and enjoys creating knives to his customers' specifications.

Luke's most successful design is an EDC folder simply called Luke. The model has gone through several iterations, with the original version featuring a flipper mechanism, an angular handle, and a distinctive Finnish-style blade with a stepped pattern.

Most Scheepers handles are made from 6061-T6 aerospace-grade aluminum. For his custom pieces, Luke occasionally adds more exotic materials, including rosewood, Timascus, and copper, as decorative inlays.

Luke has long favored steels produced by American manufacturers, and in recent years he has developed a particular preference for Nitro-V, a modern stainless steel produced by New Jersey Steel Baron LLC. Originally developed with cutlery applications in mind, Nitro-V offers good edge retention and excellent resistance to both fresh and salt water.

To get the most out of the steel, Scheepers uses cryogenic heat treatment on his blades. He finishes them with hand-applied satin, and also likes protective finishes such as DarkWash and highly durable Cerakote ceramic coatings.

Luke Scheepers is not the kind of maker to settle on a single formula. He constantly experiments with new designs, moving from compact gentleman's folders to substantial folding knives whose blades bring a kitchen cleaver to mind.

We continue to follow the Australian knifemaker's work with great interest. To check the availability of Luke Scheepers custom knives at Maria Stalina Knives, contact our manager.
