Oleksii Nesterenko
Oleksii Nesterenko is a young Ukrainian maker who has only recently made a name for himself in the world of custom knifemaking. He began making knives professionally in 2015 and, within just a few years, earned the respect of knife enthusiasts on both sides of the border.
Within a single year, the Kyiv-based maker introduced four distinctive models. Their designs differ, but all bear the same unmistakable signature: the formal Onyx folder, the compact Opal gentleman's knife, the elegant Kasatka flipper and, finally, the stylish Rubizh EDC. Oleksii's work quickly won over collectors and enthusiasts, who followed his development with growing interest. Within months, his blade finishes evolved into refined hand-rubbed satin, while the scales, clip and hardware acquired an exceptionally clean, meticulously finished appearance. His knives had become customs worthy of international recognition — and that recognition was not long in coming. In 2019, one of Oleksii Nesterenko—s works received an award at the renowned SICAC knife show in Paris.
The secret behind the maker's rapid rise lies not only in his talent, but also in his professional education. In 2006, Oleksii graduated from Kyiv's National Aviation University, Faculty of Aircraft, specialising in Hydrogas Systems. During his studies, he learned engineering design and developed a strong theoretical foundation in metalworking.
He began working while still a student. Within two years, he progressed from junior engineer to lead process engineer. He then spent five years working as a business process manager before devoting himself entirely to knifemaking in 2015.
Nesterenko's knives are so refined and visually compelling that many collectors would naturally regard them as pieces for the display case. Everyday use inevitably puts the pristine finish at risk. But if you decide to carry one of Oleksii's knives as an EDC, you are unlikely to regret it. You get not only a luxurious and highly practical tool, but also the pleasure of carrying what is, without exaggeration, a remarkable piece of functional art. In terms of size and construction, the Kyiv maker's knives occupy a space somewhere between refined gentleman's folders and urban tactical EDCs.
If one were to generalise from Nesterenko's work to Ukrainian knifemaking as a whole, it would be easy to assume that Ukrainian folders are primarily luxury and collectible pieces. The maker works with premium, visually striking materials. His blades feature some of the finest European steels, with Damascus being a particular favourite. Handles are often made from high-grade carbon fibre; more recently, he has begun working with timascus and zirconium, while select models feature precious hardwoods.
Oleksii Nesterenko also pays close attention to presentation. His customs were once supplied with a plywood box, suede pouch and certificate; today, they come in an elaborate and stylish leather case.
