Scott Slobodian
Scott Slobodian is a veteran of American custom knifemaking, best known for his remarkable Japanese-style tanto knives and elegant gentleman's folders, many of which draw their decorative inspiration from Japan as well. Every Scott Slobodian knife is a true high-end custom. One of the maker's defining strengths is his virtuoso work with fine woods, which he turns into beautifully crafted handles and sheaths.
Scott's creative journey began with wood. His father owned a sawmill in Pennsylvania, and when Scott was 12, his father unloaded a trailer full of balsa wood in the yard. The same lightweight wood later used by Thor Heyerdahl to build the Kon-Tiki raft became an endless supply of material for the young craftsman. Scott carved boats, horses, and other toys from it.
His woodworking was guided by an old, well-worn copy of Do It Yourself, a book his father had received as a gift back in 1920 — 21 years before Scott was born. The book covered an astonishing range of projects, including instructions for making a medieval English sword. Naturally, the young craftsman had to give that one a try.
After graduating from high school, Scott was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he continued to explore his creative side — a trait he inherited from his mother, a watercolor artist. During his service, he worked on the military newspaper and regularly took photographs to a local cultural center for developing. While there, Scott took advantage of the opportunity to attend classes at the center, learning the basics of casting, woodworking, and working with semi-precious stones.
After leaving the Army, Scott enrolled in photography at Pennsylvania State University and later studied design at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena.
The 1960s were a time of enormous social and cultural change in the United States. Scott was deeply involved in the spirit of the era and, in 1963, participated in the March on Washington, one of the defining events of the American civil rights movement.
After spending several years working for others, Scott opened his own photography agency in the Hollywood area, with his wife Barbara helping him run the business. He worked on photo shoots and advertising campaigns and built a successful career behind the camera.
In the 1970s, however, Scott developed a fascination with the history of the pioneers of Canada and the northern United States. He designed and produced clothing and accessories inspired by historical styles and even built several Kentucky-style rifles.
His interests took another turn after Barbara completed a university course on Asian and African cultures and traveled to Japan. Scott became increasingly fascinated with the country and its artistic traditions.
Around this time, he met the renowned knifemaker and bladesmith Bob Engnath, who introduced him to the world of custom knifemaking. Scott quickly realized that knife making offered the perfect opportunity to combine his creative instincts with his fascination with Japanese culture.
After taking several lessons from Engnath, Scott began creating the Japanese-inspired tanto knives that would eventually become his signature.
Over the following years, Slobodian's knives received numerous awards. His work was named Best Art Knife of the Year by Knives Illustrated four years in a row, and in 1996 he received the same distinction at Blade Show.
Scott Slobodian became a member of the Knifemakers' Guild, as well as the German Knife Guild and the Italian Knife Makers Guild. His creations have found their way into both private and institutional collections in twenty countries.
Today, Scott Slobodian's work stands out for its distinctive combination of Japanese aesthetics, traditional craftsmanship, fine materials, and highly refined custom-knifemaking. His tanto knives and gentleman's folders are not simply functional blades, but meticulously crafted pieces of art and collectible design.
