D. Yu. Shefer — under this deliberately old-fashioned, pre-revolutionary name, an utterly distinctive maker from Yekaterinburg, Denis Shefer, creates his work. There is an easy way to describe Denis’s knives in a single word: perfection. The presentation is every bit as considered as the craftsmanship. The antique-style typeface of the logo, the use of the hard sign in model names, and the maker's certificates written in a style reminiscent of 19th-century prose are all deliberate elements of the brand’s identity. The work of this Ural maker is rooted in the traditions of Russian hunting culture, but Denis does not simply reproduce historical artifacts. He reinterprets their designs, bringing together classic lines and modern technology.
Denis's ancestors were Germans who had become part of Russian society and had lived for generations in Saint Petersburg, then the capital of the Russian Empire. During the Second World War, the Shefer family was evacuated to Sverdlovsk, now Yekaterinburg, and eventually settled there permanently.
Like many people in the Urals, Denis developed a passion for hunting. And what hunter doesn't dream of having a good knife — or better yet, a couple of them? Denis spent a long time searching for the right fixed blade, but dissatisfied with the quality of commercially available knives, he eventually decided to make one himself. For his first hunting knives, he commissioned blades from renowned bladesmiths. The results failed to meet his expectations, so Shefer decided to start making the blades himself.
Denis became seriously involved in knifemaking in the late 1990s. By the 2010s, his knives had earned a devoted following, primarily among passionate hunters. His customers eventually included other makers, among them bladesmith Anton Elistratov and metallurgist Sergey Burov. The three joined forces under the Ural EDC name and began creating custom hunting knives. Anton Elistratov was responsible for forging the blades — he even developed his own steel Ural Patterned Steel. Sergey Burov handled heat treatment, while Denis Shefer created the finished knives. The three experienced hunter-makers placed particular emphasis on practical performance and extensively tested their knives, including in actual hunting conditions. The brand's flagship models were the Flagman and Cruiser, featuring Elmax blades and contoured wooden scales.
Ural EDC focused on limited production runs, while Denis Shefer continued making custom fixed blades under his own name. His range includes both versatile hunting knives and specialized models such as skinners and dedicated fur-processing sets.
Particularly noteworthy are his elegant hunting sets inspired by 19th-century examples. A typical set may include a corkscrew, knife and fork made from Damascus steel with ironwood handles, a set of toothpicks made from sperm whale tooth, and even a brush for dusting the necks of wine bottles. Tableware eventually became a separate direction in the Ural maker's work, with the miniature fixed blade Micron being one of the finest examples.
Denis Shefer is not only an accomplished knifemaker but also a highly skilled leatherworker. The elegant cases for his hunting sets and the stylish sheaths for his fixed blades are made by the maker himself. He confidently combines Nile crocodile leather with rugged saddle leather, finishing surfaces with glassage and decorating the fasteners with his own bronze studs.
The knives and accessories of D. Yu. Shefer are refined works of decorative and applied art, where historical aesthetics meet advanced materials, and the traditions of Russian knifemaking coexist with modern heat-treatment technologies. Denis is a perfectionist who accepts no compromises. His knives are sophisticated objects defined by impeccable style and craftsmanship. The exceptionally fine finishing, combined with outstanding practical performance, makes his work truly unusual in the knife world.
