Shirogorov Brothers Workshop

The most famous folding knives in Russia

The story of Shirogorov Brothers Workshop and legendary Russian folders

Decorated with a formidable bear’s head, masculine EDC-knives have won the recognition of knife fans all over the world. Shirogorov Brothers Workshop is the most famous Russian knife brand nowadays.

Collectors dream of getting a delightful custom, while outdoor enthusiasts value Shirogorov Brothers’ knives as sturdy and reliable tools.

The company celebrated its 10th anniversary with a new reward — in 2019 at the most prestigious knife forum Blade Show in Atlanta, flipper Quantum SR became “The Best Tactical Knife of the Year”.

SBW’s motherland is Yaroslavl. The city was famous for its artisans, including armorers, from time immemorial.

It fell to Sergey and Igor Shirogorov to glorify Yaroslavl in the new millennium.

The brothers founded their workshop in 2009, but the history of making folding SBW knives is much older.

Sergey, the older brother, was the first to fall in love with knifemaking.

Although the boy barely knew this fancy word, he desperately wanted to have his own knife.

A small fixed blade made out of a hacksaw became Sergey’s debut creation.

The knife was tiny but managed to handle one of the schoolboy’s most important tasks — sharpening pencils.

From a young age Sergey enjoyed experimenting with forms and dimensions.

Inspired by action movies that arrived after the fall of the Iron Curtain, the boy created massive knives that could even embarrass Rambo’s bowie.

During that period Shirogorov received his first knifemaking equipment — a turner friend helped him obtain an emery grinder.

His passion for fixed blades faded after Victorinox multitools appeared in Yaroslavl.

The price of Swiss multitools was unaffordable for a provincial teenager, but Sergey found a solution.

He acquired an old rusty Soviet folding knife and began restoring it.

The work was long and painstaking.

After two years every part had been replaced and the mechanism renewed.

At that moment the young maker realized that folders were his true calling.

At first Sergey Shirogorov made knives only in his spare time.

Later he registered as an entrepreneur and began participating in knife exhibitions.

Most likely Sergey would have remained an author of outstanding folding customs if it had not been for Igor Shirogorov, who in 2005 предложил развивать бизнес together.

Many believe that the charming and optimistic Igor was responsible only for business processes and promotion. That is not true.

In the early years of SBW, Igor handled a significant portion of the manual labor, including assembly and turning operations.

Later, as a certified CNC operator, he developed the company’s machine park.

At first the brothers worked from an apartment, later renting industrial premises and hiring assistants.

Orders multiplied rapidly, and Shirogorov Brothers Workshop evolved into a full-scale company specializing in high-quality serial tactical knives and limited semi-custom editions.

Every detail of SBW knives is produced at the company’s workshop in Yaroslavl.

Manual assembly and tuning are also carried out there.

If someone offers you “Chinese Shirogorovs,” be certain — it is a fake.

The only foreign trace in SBW knives may be found in the blades, which are produced from premium American and European steels.

Titanium for the handles, however, is sourced in Russia.

The authorship of the most famous SBW models belongs to Sergey Shirogorov.

The knifemaker created iconic designs such as “Flipper-95”, “Hati”, “111” and “F3”.

The assortment also includes successful collaborations with other masters.

Shiroholics — as Workshop fans call themselves — especially admire the flippers designed by renowned Belarusian knifemaker Dmitry Sinkevich.

Limited folders such as “Tetra”, “Coordinal”, “Poluchotkiy” and “Dark V” are dream pieces for many collectors.

Flipper Russian Dr. Death, created in collaboration with legendary American knifemaker Tom Mayo, also achieved remarkable success.

On the international stage, Shirogorov Brothers Workshop stands alongside industry legends such as Microtech and Spyderco.

Russian knives have conquered collectors from Europe, the USA, Australia and Africa.

Around the world, the company’s name became synonymous with premium-quality EDC knives.

Maria Stalina Knives possesses an extensive collection of SBW folders.

We are ready to share both famous serial models and exclusive semi-custom pieces with you.
