Svetlin Stefanov is a talented artist and woodcarver, as well as a renowned master of caricature. His work has received prestigious awards at international exhibitions and earned him numerous artistic accolades.
Svetlin Stefanov was born in Bulgaria in 1960. His hometown, Tryavna, is best known as a center of traditional woodcraft. It is a small, charming, and exceptionally picturesque town. Most of its buildings were constructed in the Bulgarian National Revival style, its old streets are paved with stone, and forest-covered mountains rise all around it.
The picturesque surroundings and harmony of historic Bulgarian architecture seem almost designed to inspire creativity. It is hardly surprising that Stefanov chose woodcarving as his craft: Tryavna is home to a remarkable Museum of Icon Painting and Woodcarving, as well as an arts school.
The cartoonist has spent almost his entire life in this enchanting town, leaving only occasionally and usually for short periods — for example, to attend the «Cyril and Methodius» Teachers' Institute in Dupnitsa.
Svetlin began drawing professionally at the age of 26, after graduating from university. His caricatures are infused with sharp satire and warm humor. He has an extraordinary ability to notice the subtle details of everyday life and transform them into vivid visual metaphors, exaggerating the ordinary and proving that every moment has room for a smile — and sometimes for outright laughter.
A husband running away from his passionate wife during quarantine; a child offering an ice cream to a snowman; an executioner being photographed by his own victim — these are typical examples of Svetlin Stefanov's storytelling.
The artist primarily creates vivid, colorful caricatures, although black-and-white drawings also feature in his work. Sometimes, however, his characters seem to outgrow the two-dimensional confines of the page and acquire a third dimension, transforming into wooden sculptures.
Stefanov's three-dimensional works faithfully reproduce their illustrated ancestors: the same rounded lines, the same playful proportions, and the same irresistible cartoon-like charm.
Svetlin Stefanov carves his sculptures from light-colored woods and mounts them on round stone bases. He usually allows the wood to retain its natural golden hue, but every now and then the painter in him takes over, and his brush brings the cheerful sculptures to life in a riot of colors.
