Zero Tolerance Knives (ZT) is a manufacturer of premium folding knives renowned for their durability, precision, and performance. The brand is often regarded as the high-end counterpart to Kershaw Knives, with both companies operating under the umbrella of Kai USA Ltd.
ZT specializes in both production models and limited-edition releases. Over the years, its knives have earned multiple awards at Blade Show Atlanta, one of the most prestigious events in the knife industry.
Although Zero Tolerance is an American brand, its roots trace back to Japan. Its parent company, Kai Group, was founded in 1952 in Seki, Gifu Prefecture—a city long recognized as the historic center of Japanese blade making. For more than 800 years, Seki has been associated with the production of exceptional edged tools, from samurai swords to modern kitchen knives and precision instruments.
The founders of Kai Group focused on practical, everyday products. The company began with razors and replacement blades, gradually expanding its portfolio over the decades. Today, Kai manufactures more than 10,000 products, including kitchen cutlery, professional barbering tools, scissors, razors, industrial blades, and surgical instruments.
By the late twentieth century, Kai began exploring the tactical knife market. Drawing on centuries of manufacturing expertise and decades of modern engineering experience, the company looked toward the United States—the heart of contemporary knife culture. With its strong tradition of knife ownership and everyday carry, the American market offered an ideal audience.
To establish a stronger presence in the U.S., Kai formed Kai USA Ltd. In 1996, the company acquired Kershaw Knives, a respected American maker known for quality production knives.
A decade later, Kai launched Zero Tolerance Knives. The goal was ambitious: create premium American-made knives designed with the help of leading custom knifemakers. Production was established in Tualatin, Oregon, a state known for its knife-friendly culture and long-standing appreciation of everyday carry tools.
The first ZT models were introduced in 2006. That same year, the ZT 0500, designed by Grant and Gavin Hawk, received the award for Most Innovative American Design at Blade Show. Five years later, the brand earned one of the industry's highest honors when the ZT 0777 won the coveted Knife of the Year award. From 2011 through 2015, Zero Tolerance became a consistent presence among Blade Show's award winners.
While the brand initially focused on hard-use tactical designs, it soon expanded into premium everyday carry folders. ZT knives are known for combining robust construction with refined engineering and modern materials. Their blades are crafted from high-performance steels such as CTS-204P, CPM 20CV, CPM S35VN, and CPM S30V, while handles commonly feature G10, titanium, and carbon fiber.
Today, Zero Tolerance remains one of the most respected names in production knife making, valued by collectors, enthusiasts, and everyday users alike for its commitment to innovation, quality, and uncompromising performance.
