Starlingear

Starlingear
Ryk Maverick is an American jeweler, designer, and the founder of Starlingear, a brand renowned for its bold aesthetic, exceptional craftsmanship, and unmistakable character. Over the years, his creations have earned a devoted following around the world and found their way into the collections of celebrities including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Johnny Depp, Ozzy Osbourne, Ben Moody, and many others.
A self-taught creative with an unusually broad range of talents, Maverick built his reputation without formal artistic training. At just seventeen, he began working with Extreme, a manufacturer of extreme sports equipment. He later collaborated with the apparel company Bad Boy and contributed artwork, logos, and album-cover designs for major bands, including Guns N’ Roses and ZZ Top.
In 1998, Maverick founded Starlingear Corporation in Los Angeles. From the beginning, his vision was clear: create exclusive, handcrafted jewelry and accessories for men, combining meticulous craftsmanship with a distinctive, unapologetically bold design language.
What sets Starlingear apart is Maverick's signature approach to skull motifs. Rather than repeating a single design, he continually reimagines the theme through different forms, proportions, materials, and personalities. Across Starlingear collections, skulls can be imposing, playful, humorous, aggressive, or eccentric — but never generic. Every piece has its own unmistakable identity.
Among the brand’s most sought-after creations are its rings and lanyard beads. Produced in small batches and finished by hand, these accessories occupy the space where craftsmanship, collectibility, and personal expression meet. They are luxury objects designed for those who appreciate originality and exceptional workmanship. Unsurprisingly, Starlingear pieces have become highly desirable among collectors, particularly within the knife and EDC communities.
Every Starlingear creation begins in Ryk Maverick's workshop, where a design first takes shape as a hand-carved wax model. The wax prototype is then encased in a heat-resistant mold and transformed through the traditional lost-wax casting process. Molten metal fills the cavity, capturing every detail of the original sculpture.
Casting is only the beginning.
To achieve the level of quality for which Starlingear is known, each piece undergoes extensive hand-finishing. Surfaces are refined, imperfections removed, and details enhanced through careful polishing and finishing work until the final object meets Maverick's exacting standards.
One of Starlingear's defining characteristics is its willingness to experiment with materials. Alongside traditional precious metals, Maverick has worked with iron, copper, titanium, cobalt, palladium, and other challenging alloys. In the hands of Maverick and his team, even the most demanding materials are transformed into wearable works of art.
As Starlingear's reputation has grown, so too has the number of counterfeit products on the market. Collectors often note that imitation pieces lack the crisp detailing and precision of the originals. To help ensure authenticity, genuine Starlingear creations carry the maker’s distinctive hallmark.
Throughout its history, Starlingear has partnered with a variety of manufacturers and artists, creating custom designs for products ranging from LensLight flashlights to Steve McSwain guitars.
Its most celebrated collaboration, however, is undoubtedly the long-running partnership with Strider Knives.
Ryk Maverick and Mick Strider have been friends for many years, and their creative partnership has produced some of the most memorable projects in modern knife collecting. Strider’s hard-use knives are enhanced with custom finishes and complemented by Starlingear’s iconic skull beads, creating pieces that are instantly recognizable.
Depending on the theme, these limited-edition releases may celebrate occasions such as St. Patrick’s Day, Halloween, and other special events, with each series featuring its own unique visual identity.
Today, Starlingear remains one of the most distinctive names in contemporary jewelry and EDC culture — a brand whose creations combine craftsmanship, individuality, and a sense of character that is impossible to replicate.
