New Russian knives
Custom knives of the Manufactory S&L are high tech folders for gentlemen and EDC knives with a unique design and mechanics. We truly believe a knife can not only be a tool but a spectacular accessory or a full-fledged artwork.
Want to buy a quality knife but tired of the knife market trending cliché?
The prior goal of the Manufacture is to make the knives unlike other manufacturer’s production styles. A knife must be beautiful, quaint in its dynamics and impress with its shapes and aesthetic. That’s why Manufactory S&L’s projects are focused on creating new lock systems and exceptional solutions in decoration.
Manufactory S&L’s knives are not only recognizable by their mechanics but also known for their production style. Nevertheless, Manufacture’s products are varied and aren’t limited by the tendency of sticking to a specific form.
Design is art. To present a mechanism as an artwork is our concept. We want to show to the world what an EDC knife made in Russia might look like.
Every knife starts with an idea of its mechanics. The idea is getting clothed in metal step by step – from a scratch to a plan, from the plan to a 3D digital model.
Then we make a real knife model of polymers and metals. The model is used for testing the mechanical parts and detailing the form of an item to reach the maximum ergonomics.
After the first series of tests a working prototype is made normally of stainless steel and titanium or bronze. Final decorations are applied on that prototype. On each stage of the knife production improvisation is the key. Ideas evolve right in the process of knife making, getting body, plot and character.
Having the experimental prototypes tested Manufacture moves to fabricating the knife itself. We seek for the combination of decorative arts and utility. As they say, a knife must cut.
We choose carefully raw material providers. We receive alloyed Damascus and powder steel RWL34 from a leading manufacturer “Damasteel AB”, colored art composites from Russian “Zladinox” and American Nickols Damascus and Alpha Knife Supply, forged tool steel 95x18 from the Laboratory of Special Metallurgy and other materials from reliable Russian purveyors.
Manufacture does not use hardened steel in blade production. This allows us to precisely adjust parts of our knives. Each blade’s form is being specified not only for every model, but also for each knife individually. Only after that individual adjustment a blade gets hardened. Having been treated with heat in a vacuum thermal furnace, a blade gets cooling between 2 copper plates. That method protects from detail’s deformation during this stage of heat treatment.
After hardening a blade must get final processing. We do not use grinder, last refinements and blade sharpening are both done by hand.
Manufactory S&L gives satin finish and mirror finish to the blades and to the handles’ parts manually with multi-textured abrasives and diamond polishing paste on a magnetic holding plate.
If the project involves stonewashing, a blade gets sandblasted and is put into a tumbling barrel afterwards, where it will be worked on step by step with abrasive particles of varied fractions and hardness.
Talented jewelers, engraves and artists help us decorate our conceptual products. Jewelry casting and incrustation, engraving and isometric milled ornaments might be found in blades’ and handles’ decoration.
The pivot systems vary from washers and bearing to the systems where the tang end reaches the steel frame. And, of course, there are folders without any axis at all.
We seek for every item to reflect our professionalism and sense of style. We want each item to impress with its quality, shape, reliability and ergonomics.
